Hi, Why do people want to be friends with celebrities? so you can say my mate is Mel Gibson? Does it make you feel better.

Or Is it the money, the influence, personality? What is it? How do you feel when you get a celeb autograph?

i have lots of Formula 1 drivers autographed pictures on my wall. I felt it was nice of them to give something back to their fans.
i often say i would love to live in their world, ie money, status etc but i know i couldnt cope with it. maybe other people would be able to and that is what they crave

Associating with celebirites will NEVER make a normal person feel better...makes you feel inadequate and less important and may lead to inferiority complexes. As a matter of fact people who want to be friends with celebrities have a poor self- esteem and that will be an escaping avenue to try and be famous yet in reality they are not.
Getting a celeb autograph will not give you food on the table, be yourself, work hard in pursuing your dreams and enjoy your life and money if you've got it.

well for many reasons....they have a lot of money and power, they are popular and most of the time fun to be with, they will make you famous......do I need to go on. Personally I don't give a crap and it feels good to get a celeb autograph I guess it depends who it is.

All my friends are celebrities in the real world as for the other type (and there are) - I would not go out of my way for some of them so their status is meaningless to me. As for their autographs - I truely would not stoop to ask for one giving their egos a further boost just isnt required.

I personally could care less about celebs but some people just want to be close to the excitement and live vicariously through them.

They kinda fall in love with the person for what they have brought to them but sometimes it goes too far (stalkers). And I have seen people spend all their time following them, collecting memorabilia.

I think they want the fame for themselves.

Don't know myself either but according to TV discussion forums and comments from TV audience research analysts about a third of TV viewers hate programs like "Get me out of here - I'm a Celebrity" and change to another channel instantly when such comes on. I am one of those. BUT according to same research studies about two thirds of viewers seem to love and get very excited by such programmes because they are fascinated by celebrities and want to be like them. So bully for them!. It seems to come back to the old adage "you can please some of the people some of the time, but you can't please all the people all the time"?

I guess for most it boils down to fame by association.
I have several "famous" friends myself (LOL) - well , famous in certain fields that is and however have never asked for their autograph.

1) It impresses other people.

2) It can also boost one's own self esteem - i.e. why would someone and important and loved and idolised as X want to hang out with me unless I ALSO was a really cool person, fun. charismatic?

god knows why
may be they have been friends for a long time before they were famous or because they want a slice of the action
