I bought a 4-cylinder, 2-WD 1981 Chevy Mikado (LUV) truck, and the oil needs to be changed. I plan on doing it myself, and I have everything to do it, but haven't been able to figure out what grade or how much oil to use. Anyone able to help me out?

hi, i admire people doing their own oil changes. i find it relaxing to do my own oil change. a beer or favorite drink on the side, friends sitting around chatting,,,, oh yes.... a four cylinder usually needs four quarts of oil. if your engine dont have any noise like clicking or knocks... i would follow the manufacturers recommendation which is marked on the oil cap or on the valve cover. but if i may i would like to suggest that you use a k&n oil filter(very expensive) but good till 10kmiles. put one time one quart of slick 50 for mileage over 100kmiles. so yes, put 4qts in, start the engine till u get oil pressure then shut engine off, recheck oil level and add as needed. check for leaks and never race the engine and you'll have another 100kmiles on that chevy. :) p.s. recycle dont pollute.

Should tell you in the owner's manual what grade you should use and how much oil goes in the crankcase. 10W-30 is pretty generic for passenger cars and trucks, and most 4-cylinder engines made in the U.S. use 4 quarts of oil. If all else fails, you can have them check for you at Napa Auto Parts or Auto Zone or Pep Boys or some place like that.
