My mum lives in bendooragh which is pretty rural and is on Virgin Mobile, she says the signal is crap. If you live in Belfast or a large town or city, you should be ok. Virgin use tmobile transmitters. I have been over to northern ireland when i had a o2 contract, i got great reception. If go to www.tmobile.co.uk you can put your postcode in and it will tell what type of reception you'll get, its called Street checker.

Look at Orange if you`re thinking about a contract, they have some good deals. You can view price plans on the net.
