Maybe because it makes her sound like a hooker, she gets a lot of stick for it, so it turns her into who she is.
Seriously, I knew someone with the name 'Hookey' and she got so much stick for it...

If you as the author are uncomforable with the name, then don't use it. A character's name is an essential part of its being, and therefore you want to make sure the name conveys the image you want.
But there is nothing inherently wrong with the last name. There are plenty of people who go through life just fine with it. And if you craft the story properly, only those with the most juvenile mentalities will be like "ohh, her name is ..hehe...hooker!" But you aren't writing for Beavis and Butthead. You're writing for (I hope) a bit more educated of an audience.

Hi there,
Names are a good way to play, you can use this to your advantage - an assumption based on the name Hooker will indeed be made, you could for example make her a cunning lander of suckers instead.
Either way, the name will have a small impact that you will need to deal with and get around.
Cheers, steve.

I like the anne part but hooker is so harsh. Not so much because of the negative connotation (you could also think of a rug hooker with no negative ideas). It is just a little blah to me.

Not really. William Shatner played a cop called TJ Hooker in the '80s and he was pretty cool in it.

Because of the obvious other meaning. Unless you're using it purposely to indicate that she's a ****, in which case it is too obvious. Pick another name--thumb through the phone book until you find a good name.

Yes because it is a term with a negative connotation. I suggested changing the last name. But that is just my opinion.

It depends on who you're aiming the short story to be read by. Teenagers would probably laugh and such, but older people would probably not even notice.

I don't think it makes any difference, now if her name was whore, well then I think you would have to re-think.
There was a tv show called TJ Hooker - mind you that was a man !.
