I want to follow a heart pattern, my question is how do I change my colors with out having so many tails to weave in later.

I really want to get this done by the 31st of this month for my sister's b-day. Any suggestions appreciated.

one way is to carry the yarn across the back of your work. This is called "stranding" You twist the yarn around the yarn you are working with, to prevent any holes in the work. If you have multiple colors you are working with in the middle of the work, you can wrap yarn around bobbins, (if you do not have bobbins the plastic clips on bread bags works well) That way the work does not get too thick.
below are two places that demonstrate. Knittinghelp.com has videos.

Well, it kind of depends on how often you are changing colors. If you are using two colors and changing them fairly frequently (not more than 8 to 10 rows) you can twist the yarns around one another at the end of each RS row and carry the color not in use up the side. It makes a braided edge that is pretty as well.

If you're going up more than an inch of knitting with a single color it may be best to cut and weave the ends as you go along. Leaving yourself several inches for a tail of each color, on a RS row pick up the new color to knit with and work the first stitch. Pick up the old color in your other hand and in the second stitch insert into the stitch and under the old color, wrap the new stitch and pull it through under both other yarns. Then work the next stitch with the old yarn held below where you are working in the stitch. Alternate the under/over with the old yarn for several stitches, then just drop it. It won't go anywhere and in the end you can stretch the work widthwise for the ease and snip the end off close to the work. On the next RS row weave in the tail of the new color in the same way.

I suggest you use a skein of wool that is a mixture of various colours. I did that for making something and it turned out really nice.

I second the answer about stranding.
