How about The Black Orpheus? It is based on a Greek myth and is filled with images, symbolism, and higher meaning.

Or if you want something more recent, O Brother Where Art Thou, loosely based on Homer's Odyssey. Great flick!

Anything that makes you think, or something you feel strongly about, like, in my case, The Departed. Lots of history there. Goodfellas works also. Something that is scientifically concievable, like Day After Tomorrow. Anything you feel comfortable writing an analysis on is a good pick.
