Ok guys I am giving a presentation tonight on Cognitive-behavioral therapy used for addictions counseling. I am wondering if anyone can provide me with an example of an addictive behavior using the ABC theory. Thanks guys!

The HARM reduction counseling that is done all around the world is excellent. I refer to the needle users bringing in their used needles to a clinic, having the used needles thrown safely away, and the users being given clean needles. This is a cognitive way to get it across to addicts that you must not share needles. It doesn't just say, 'don't do this'.........it, also, gives a way for the users to 'trade' them for free, new, clean needles. During this 'class', the problems related to drug use are discussed, the patient is tested, and any new diseases are disclosed to the patient.........with psych help as well as standard medical help available to the needle user. (don't just curse the darkness, light a candle!).

ABC theory shows that the belief leads to the activating event which then has consequences. The belief that they are celebrating leads to a drink which then can lead to some sort of consequence maybe a blackout. The disputing intervention (D) would be educating the client about the effects of alcohol and the symptoms of alcoholism, etc.. which leads to (E) the effect which is the new found knowledge which then leads to (F) a new feeling which is I do not have to drink to celebrate, because it has contributed to my addiction. This is just one example. There are many interventions for D&A counseling. Just remember A is the activating event, B is the belief, C is the emotional or behavioral consequences, D is the disputing intervention used, E is the effect, and F is the new feeling. Good luck on the presentation! I give one tonight for three hours on animal assisted therapy!
