I just bought a Mayatex wool blanket to go under my western pleasure saddle. Do I need to buy some sort of underpad to go under the wool blanket? I was looking at a gel underpad that is sized slightly smaller than the blanket.....would it be too bulky? The gel pad is about 1" thick. I don't want to cause discomfort to my horse's back. Thanks.

I always put an underpad on my western pleasure horses to help keep my expensive mohair pads clean and sweat free. I prefer the felt ones, but I have heard good things about the gel ones. You cannot pad your horse enough to cause discomfort unless you wrinkle up the blanket. We also team rope and use thick underpads and heavy pro choice pads on top.

great! Now YA is merely yet another promoting website! they permit bots to respond to questions with classified ads. Use the pad or blanket that A. facilitates the saddle in advantageous condition ideal and B. fits your teach outfit. If the saddle fits nicely, use the minimum padding (a blanket or skinny pad). If this is *slightly* wider than optimal in advantageous condition, use a thicker pad or mix of pad(s) and blanket(s). If it merely does not in advantageous condition, it merely does not in advantageous condition and padding won't create a secure, delicate in advantageous condition. Get a distinctive saddle.

In my personal experiences, if an all wool pad is used frequently for work and/or play, the horse tends to get sore spots. I would definitely get the gel pad for underneath.

If your horse is going to be uncomfortable when He rides he is going to get where he does not like to ride. In summertime a wool blanket is going to be hot on the horse. my blanket that I have is a not slip pad. the side that touches the horse feels like foam. I have some friend that uses these under their saddle blanket you can look at them at country supply.

Gel pads are excellent--1" thick will be fine under the wool pad!

hi there my name is vianna and the wool blanket will be fine against your horse's back just as long as you have a normal riding pad ontop of the wool blanket the riding pad should sit at least an inch back from the border of your wool blanket from on top of the whither, other than that you are good to go ,happy trails .

Why use a old scratchy wool pad on your horses back ? Would you want one on yours? Think about it ,scratchy wool or cool smooth gel pad ? Chose wisely.
