Homicide = deviant. War = not. Killing in self defense = acceptable. Honor killing = in some societies, normal.

Most societies see murder, particularly unprovoked, or the killing of an "innocent" as a deviant behaviour.
In contrast, killing an enemy during a war is not considered deviant. Nor is killing in self-defense.

Any killing (murder) of another human being is considered deviant in today's society. Historically, it wasn't considered such as it is now. Today, although they do not even know the people they are killing, soldiers are not considered deviants because it is their "job" to kill for their country.
