Because back in the olden days, women were dressed by servants and because they servants were for the most part right-handed, it was easier to have buttons on the left. However, men typically dressed themselves so it was easier to have buttons on the right in their clothes, and it's been the same ever since. Actually buttoning buttons, as opposed to ornamental buttons didn't come into fashion in Europe until the 14th or 15th century, before that clothes were often laced up or tied together

The tradition of having the buttons on the right for men stems from military uniforms in the 18th century. Soldiers found buttons on the left side occassionally cumbersome for drawing a sword. The swords were worn on the left. The tradition took hold in menswear as a whole.
Personally, I've never needed to draw a sword in dress uniform or otherwise, and I have a hard time understanding how the location of the buttons influences ones readiness to do this.

Goes back to the days of swords and daggers...men could easily draw their sword from a jacket that buttoned up on the right side...similar thing for shaking hands with your right...shows that you are unarmed...

Because long ago when ladies where dressed by their servents or whatever, they put the buttons on the left so it would be easier to someone else (because the majority of people are right-handed)
Men have theirs on the right because they dressed themselves.

Back in the old days ladies were dressed by servents, where as men dressed themselves, so it was done so that it was easier for the servants to dress them and it's kind of stuck in fashion

Its same with jeans.... mens button is on the other side while women on the other.

Maybe men's buttons are on the right because they are... RIGHT?? (no, no, no..... I defy that logic!)

Cybele's answer makes a lot of sense.

Because swords were worn on the left for access with the right hand.

to add to a few others. it was also the way light leather armor was worn. stabbing is easier to get through if you find a whole. so if you hook the armor up so a rightie cant find a whole as easy. less stabbing action makes it through.
