I would say this is the menopause, particularly because of her age :)

Here is some further info:

It is nothing to worry about and happens to every single woman, on average around the age of 50 - 55. It is the body stopping being fertile. Some problems that can be had are hot flashes, sweating, irregular periods, vaginal dryness and being over emotional, all of which can be helped with HRT if really needed, but it's best just to sit it out and let it happen. It's nature. She should see a doctor to discuss possible treatments, have a check up, check symptoms and find out what to expect.

It doesn't last forever, although it can feel like it for some women, and the end result is no periods, yay!

She will need to check her diet is good though, because the hormonal change means she will be more prone to things such as breast cancer and osteoporosis, but again this can all be helped by seeing a doctor to discuss better diet etc.

Many women have no side effects of the menopause at all, their periods simply change and then stop :)
