You absolutely need to go a Knee specialist type MD. I have had three cartilage {Meniscus) surgeries myself. Your symptoms sound very much like mine. After my surgeries, I continued to work as a Firefighter/Paramedic. Get your knee seen now, while it might be something minimal like I described, and not something worse, such as your collateral ligaments. Knee surgeons these days can do great work..the state of the art has never been better. Good luck and don't worry...I'm sure they can "fix you up".

Don't trust doctors they have no idea what they are talking about. I got diagnosed with arthritis by a doctor, weak muscles by a physio, a piece of dead bone by an osteopath and a genetic disease by a nurse.

I recon your best bet will be a physio, some use ultrasounds to re build and calm swollen tissue and they can give you stretches to help get the flexibility back into your knee.

I hope it gets better soon

I would go to a specialist, someone who is an orthopedic doctor. The knee as well as other joints are very complex. It could have been a bone, or a tendon, or something else.
Ask your general physiscian to refer you to a orthopedic surgeon, who will exam your knee and will be able to recommend physical therapy or other treatment.

GO GET IT CHECKED OUT!

Still experiencing pain after 6 months is not normal.

I would ask for a referral to a specialist. No one on Yahoo Answers can tell you definitively what is wrong without running tests on you. General practitioners can be very slow in addressing these kinds of things that require expensive tests such as MRI's. If you are part of an HMO it is not in your primary care physician's financial best interest to order such tests, although specialists are not shy about ordering them since the results often point to a need for surgery that puts money in their pocket. Ask for a referral. You can be certain that if your primary care physician was having the pain you have for as long as you have he or she would have already seen a specialist!!

If it's still swollen after 6 months, then it wasn't somethin easy...it's seems not normal, and you should definitely always take x-rays to be sure!
If it's possible, i would give you the advice to go to a different doc and let him take at least some x-rays!
Knee injury's are usually not healing very fast, but after 6 months it shouldn't be swollen anymore...
I wish you the best for that!

You need to see a orthopedic one who specializes with knees. Knee injuries are nothing to fool around with. When you are talking about locking that usually involves the cartliage or the tendons. Soft tissue injuries can take months to heal. But the pain should have gotten better by now.
