Historically clowns represented the first line of attack by the Norse armies in the 13th century. These vicious warriors would ruse opposing forces by acting out pantomimes and comical skits, then destroy them with hammers of righteousness and blades of death.

Clowns as far as I know came from the jester which entertained a king. They painted a smile because they couldn't actually smile fearing their life if they didn't entertain the king enough it meant death.

So I can understand a false sense of happiness is naturally frightening. It often represents being sneaky, or persuasive. Such as a sales person smiling like you are a relative. People understand that altruism just isn't that present in our society with out a negative. Such as a stranger with candy.

One of my friends who was adopted from Russia says she hates clowns because there, criminals would dress up as clowns and then scare everyone. Maybe the fact that criminals and clowns have a connection makes people hate them. Or it could be because they look so evil and satanic with the unnatural colors and odd paintings on their faces...that's why I don't like them! I'm not scared of them really, but I think they're very ugly. *:o)

I don't really like clowns that much, they actually give me the creeps. Have you seen Stephen King's It? I have and ever since then I don't care for them. They scare me....

Maybe for attention.

I suppose when we were children they were a bit scary because they have wild hair, face paint and because they are spontaneous, we never knew what they were going to do. But as pre adults, I would say they act scared for attention.

Good luck, Happy Spring.
