What is the age of consent in Louisiana? What does it really mean? Why do people get age of majority and age of consent mixed up?

Age of consent is generally used as a phrase that means age at which one can consent to sex; however, there are also other ages of consent, such as consent to marry without parental permission. The age of consent to have sex in Louisiana is 17 for male/female consent. That means that neither a boy nor a girl younger than 17 can consent to sex, no matter what they say. If you have sex with someone under 17 you can be charged with statutory rape. It is not a defense to say that s/he said it was ok.

I have no idea what the age is but to be the age of consent means you have to be that age before you can have sexual relations with anyone. Under that age and the "other" person may be considered a rapist. Why do they get them mixed up? Misunderstandings of the law.
