The resorts on the strip are just that: resorts. And if that's what you are going for, then great! There are plenty of shows and attractions to see besides gambling and food. Also, the architecture on the strip is fabulous. When I am there, I usually take a day just to walk around and look at the buildings. Some shows are free too, like the fountains at Bellagio, and the Pirate show at Treasure Island.
If you are going for the real "old" Las Vegas feeling, Downtown is your best bet. The places to stay (The Four Queens, the Horseshoe, Las Vegas Club, Golden Gate, the Plaza) are the true "hotel & casino," the way Las Vegas was founded. Gambling, drinking, food, and (sometimes) sleeping are what they cater to. The hotels are clean, have great places to eat, and are really inexpensive (I am going next week and paying about $49/night) but they aren't that luxurious. The strip is about 10 minutes away, so it's a quick drive if you want to hop over there. Fremont street downtown is covered by a canopy of lights. Every night they have free shows which are choreographed to music. It is terrific. Everything on Fremont street is w/ in short, short walking distance, so leaving your car at the hotel and walking is simple.
I would recommend going to www.lasvegas.com to find a room. They usually have good specials and good description of accomodations. Have a good time! Take only what you can afford to lose when gambling!

Zumanity is a great show to see here. If you want a good Vegas time and save some $$$ you have to do what the locals here do.
We have some great live jazz concerts on Lake Las Vegas etc.
The best food and gambeling experiences and the cheapest rooms too are off the strip
The Station Casinos are great.
But if you are really looking for the "campy" typical Vegas experience be prepared to spend the $$$$$!
you can email me kirah331@yahoo.com if you really want to know more about how the locals have fun!

Depends on your price range. I know you said "reasonably priced" but that could be taken a few ways. I will give you good hotels that you can typically get for under $100 if you book online within a good time frame.
The Paris
Harrah's
Monte Carlo
The Luxor
The Palms
New York, New York.
Good shows:
Gordy Brown
Zummanity

first of all, THE SHOW you have to see is Elton John and the red piano at caesars.....2nd..right now the excalibur hotel is offering a 51 dollar a night summer promotion...go to www.excaliburcasino.com.....best place to eat on the moderate price range is the Carnegie Deli at the mirage...the best place to eat on the high price range, either Kokomo's again at the mirage (make a reservation) or Top of the World, at the Stratosphere, (make a reservation) ...as far as entertainment...head over around 7pm to the NYNY hotel casino, there they have the dueling pianos, a rowdy good time sing along with two extremely talented piano players....and lastly depending on how "open" you and your husband are....get into a cab, and tell the driver to take you to the Red Rooster, its Las Vegas most famous and best run, swingers club...50 bucks to get as a couple...but an entire house full of people who like to watch, be watched and possibly more....

skip the strip, go downtown. the strip is just vegas' version of Disneyland, all poof and pop not substance..
stay someplace like the 4 queens, or somewhere else for that REAL vegas feeling..
drink gamble, do what you're supposed to do in vegas dont give in to the commerical super powers that a: pay off in crappy percentages, and b: make you eat their overpriced grade D food..
so yah..have a great weekend downtown..dont forget to catch the nightly show that plays downtown out on the street...(some light show in that long tunnel that connects all the downtown casinos).

The Very BEST way doesn't even require you to go to Vegas. It just requires a hot tub, plenty of pudding, and lots of patience.
