If your going to stick with the prepaid option they are all pretty much the same cost, the only thing to remember with the prepaid option is the coverage areas sometimes are different than what a monthly plan is, the reason for this is because some carriers dont let their prepaids roam. If your family is looking to go with a family plan then you need to determine what minutes you guys collectively use and go from there. Keeping the phone numbers should be easy if your going to stick with the same carrier like you a T-Mobile prepaid and if you get a contract they will let you keep the number if the contract is with them, some companies wont release the number if its a prepaid and your going to go with another company, mainly you dont own the number in that instance your basically renting the number from them and without an account number its even harder to get it ported over. I would stay with a T-Mobile family plan, and get a nokia 6133, or even get the pink razor if you want, if your not going to go with a myfaves plan then you can purchase a non my faves rzr for like $50.

Here is the cheapest... buy a phone on your own or through T mobile but it is best to buy your own and be sure it has a sim card and tri band so you can take it overseas and use an overseas sim card. Then, do a pre-pay of one hundred dollars to T mobile. If you do this amount it will not expire for one year so if you never use the phone each month will have costed less than fifteen bucks. The only bad thing is if you are in an area that does not get T mobile reception but in any sizable town it will work. IF you use the phone more you just buy more pre pay loads. If you get a monthly plan instead i think it will surely cost more than fifteen bucks a month

We started out with Cingular Go-Phone. It ran about $45 a month for 1200 minutes (hubby was a trucker, and needed that amount). After keeping it on for 6 months, Cingular allowed us to convert to a regular phone.
Once on the Cingular plan, we set up for 3000 minutes shared, nights/weekends and mobile-to-mobile free. We currently have 4 phones on this plan, never run out of minutes, and it runs us $200 each month. However, we use them as primary phones, and don't have a home phone now. It's worked out wonderfully.
