I would like to use a paint stripper and a little bit of sanding to refinish my stairs. I know they recommend not to if you are pregnant, but I figure if I wear one of those super duper masks (better than those white things that doctors wear) AND I keep all the doors and windows open AND I leave the area as soon as I apply the stripper (which takes about 2 minutes cuz I'm doing one stair at a time) that I will be fine. What do you think?

Also, is there lead based anything on the stairs that I am sanding? The house was built before 1978 but this isn't paint that I am sanding off. It's wood finish/lacquer. Anyone know?

If I were you I wouldn't take the chance. That babies life inside you is a miracle and I really would not take the chance at loosing it over something so small. Aside from miscarrying, you could cause serious long term effects to the baby. If I were you, I wouldn't. But then I am a person who only gets teased by pregnancy, I carry babies to 8 weeks and loose them. I've done that four times.

First off how far along are you? Not only the fumes a danger to the fetus but if you get any of the chemicals on you it can get into your bloodsteam and go to the baby very dangerous. I would recomend avoiding this task at all cost. If you do decide to go ahead with this project then make sure you follow all precautions, Very good face mask and gloves.
As far as part 2 of the question, I dont think that the wood finishers have a lead base, just the paints

Is there someone else who can do this for you? I just would not recommend it. I do not know if there is lead based lacquer, I would ask my bf but he is not here. I do believe you can buy some test strip or something that will let you know if something is lead based. One of the biggest risks of doing these kinds of projects is the fumes. It can make you very sick and dizzy while pregnant which is dangerous for your. Personally, I had to spend the night at my parents house while my b/f painted the nursery in our house. I became so ill I started throwing up and thought I was going to pass out. Personally, I don't think it is worth it. If someone ele can't do it for you then wait until the baby is born.
Good luck and take care.

There could be lead..You never know from back then. I know that hubby (who is a journeyman painter) wont let me be around strippers when I am pregnant. And if there is ANY dust.. I have to be gone. I would say.. don't do it. Wait until the baby is born or have someone do it when you are gone. You are doing everything you can to have a healthy baby.. don't stop now. Also.. those super duper masks don't work so great. My hubby has an actual respirator and was STILL overexposed to a hazardous chemical. Not worth it. Good luck

This is up to you, but there is a reason that they don't recommend it. My mother miscarried what would have been my little brother or sister because of being around harmful fumes. I think the fact that you are questioning it and it can greatly affect the health of your child should be answer enough for you.
