The time period and location. The term Bohemian was used in the nineteenth century to describe the non-traditional lifestyles of marginalized and impoverished artists, writers, musicians, and actors in major European cities. Hippie refers to a youth movement of the 1960's, mainly in America and England, which was influenced by Bohemainism, and represented social rebellion against "the establishment". Both movements are associated with recreational drug use and "free love".

Real Bohemians are people who live in the region of Germany known as Bohemia. The term has been used to describe a lifestyle that is a bit off of mainstream culture. During the fifties it was often people associated with the arts and perhaps some types of music. North Beach in San Francisco and Greenwich village in New York were two Bohemian meccas. Beards, dark clothing, coffee houses ,folk music etc were usually associated with Bohemian lifestyle.
Hippies is the term applied to the counter culture movement of the late sixties and seventies. They generally eschewed the mainstream values of America such as materialism, monogamy, bathing, and a day to day job. Music of this era was what was referred to as Acid Rock, drugs were an important part of this culture especially pot and LSD. Communes were also a part of this movement. Much of their focus was aimed at the Vietnam War and its impact on America's youth as well as several significant environmental issues. There are people who dress up in tie dye and take drugs today that call themselves hippies but most of them don't really understand what the movement was about.

Bohemians have more of an interest in culture, arts & humanities & where self- expression is their main focus in life.
Hippies are also free spirits, but are kind of more about defying society/laws for what they feel is right. (ex- opposing war or legalizing drugs)

Bohemians are normal people. They just have an accent and a different view on some things. Hippys are pot smoking tree huggers.

*Trust me, I lived in Nassau (Bahamas) for 3 years. They are normal people!
