Depends on who you ask?
Research and make your own choice.
Go to the city website:
www.houstontx.gov
There is a link that offer a variety of companies that the city recommends (companies had to pass certain requirements or "points" for customer service, rates, etc to be on the list). These companies are what the city felt offered the best rates, lowest complaints and best costumer service.
If you don't want to choose among those companies, you can go with other companies the city rated, however did not make their list.
I signed up with Tex-Star through the site and so far, so good.
I live in a single family, 1 story, 3 bdroom home and my bill for the month of February was $43.00
(Keep in mind I have gas heating and stove/range).
Good luck.

I agree that powertochoose.org is the right to shop for electricity. The electricity itself is all the same, but each company just provides the marketing and customer service. Repair calls still go to Centerpoint. Reliant is the highest priced electric retailer in the Houston market, it pertains to the deregulation of the industry. Since they were the company that had the previous monopoly, the legislature voted that they could not under-cut the other companies prices. It was an effort to create "real competition" because Reliant had all the name recognition and would have kept all the customers otherwise just for convienience. If you don't mind sparse customer service and automatic draft for payments, and only e-statements, Spark has the lowest cost in Houston (last time I checked). But, you can compare on that website. I think energy costs are on the rise nationwide, despite carriers.

Go with TXU. I have reliant and every time there is a problem you have to call TXU, and they serve their customers first , then reliant and other companies customers. I'm gonna switch back

I have CPL Retail Energy right now and thinking of switching to Reliant. My bill this month was $565 for 1,200 square foot home, although it is all electric but, that is still way too high. It's around the same in the summer months too. Good luck

well take Reliant Energy company out of your options because it is becoming a monopoly. Mayor bill white has a program that help houstonians find reasonable prices.

They are too expensive. I am using Spark Energy now and I am saving about 20% on electricity.
