An emotional affair robs your partner of the time and intimacy that they deserve. In many respects, it is even worse than a "physical" affair because of the emotional impact it can cause on the innocent partner.

Yes, it is possible if a person "allows" it. Usually, we will know when we are going down the wrong path. Like, being casual friends with a co-worker and chatting with them is normal, but if we start feeling some attraction and feed it with meeting them outside, or emailing them often sharing stuff, giving gifts, etc etc. we internally know we are going down a wrong path. But a person needs to have this inner compass. It is another thing if it is innocent...but if it is done in hiding, that is usually an indication that they are guilty of something. OR, another reason for hiding is if they are very afraid of your reaction, even though what they are doing is not actually wrong.
Communication is important. Keeping your intuition working is important. Good judgment is important. Being honest with our partners is important. Dont take your partner for granted...and I personally don't like to trust *blindly*....trust is to be earned too....
I expect every person to have this inner compass....and do what they think is right.

I've been accused of such. Many years ago (when we were first married) my wife and I went through some really tough times (arguing, storming out of the house, etc.) Enter a new co-worker, "Dawn" who was very vibrant, outgoing, and attractive. She recognized my relationship was on the rocks after a spell, and we found ourselves bending our schedules to be alone together, doing outings and simply conversing. There was flirting, but nothing physically intimate. My wife was crushed when she realized what was going on. But after several months of this, "Dawn" and I went our separate ways. I remain married (past the rough stuff and am happy), and Dawn got hitched last year. We stay in touch time and time again, things are pleasant and friendly.

I guess you can send mixed signals but usually cheating means having a physical affair

Well realistically a strong emotional affair is going to lead to something else. But on its own I don't consider it cheating.

I would say yes. Becasue if you are having even an eotional affair with someone, it means that your heart is not really in the right place is it. It also means that you don't love the person you are with as much as you thought you did and it could lead to soemthing more.

No. Cheating is physical contact. Anything else that you feel guilty about, maybe you shouldn't be doing it.

Any affection, attention, etc. physical or otherwise, which should be reserved for your partner, that you share with another is cheating.
My $0.02, anyway.
