What makes UPS and FedEx efficient deliverers of packages?

Hi, I would like to get a little insite into technologies and methods that allow for efficient distribution of packages with modern package-delivery companies (UPS, FedEx, etc). Annything you know about their use of gps, routing, etc. would be apreciated.

Efficient my butt. I sent out a x mas package on the 10th of December from Daytona to Myrtle Beach, and paid extra for guaranteed delivery by x mas. They got it Jan 10th. I could have walked it there in that amount of time.
