You would plant seedlings to replace the mature trees you have harvested for several reasons:
1) As you go from location to location harvesting trees for lumber (or other reasons you are cutting them down), you leave growing trees in your wake...when you come back to that area a few decades later, you can harvest mature trees from that area again.
2) Most countries have legislation in place for mandatory re-forestation. Trees produce Oxygen through photosynthesis and take in carbon dioxide. Without forests of trees, the balance would be thrown off and the earth's atmosphere could run out of breathable air.
3) While de-forestation is destructive, by planting seedlings, you reduce the effects of weather (especially erosion).

If you don't, you get massive erosion once rain comes along. The tree roots hold the soil together, and the trees themselves provide a canopy to moderate sunlight for the underbrush below. Once the trees are gone, their roots die, and often the brush dies as well, meaing that there is little or no vegetation to hold the soil together.

If you are a lumber company, you also are doing it so that you can continue to do business in the future, because otherwise it's a 1 time deal.

So that the forest doesn't get depleted. We cut the tree for the wood and unless we replant it, sooner or later, we will run out of enough forests and thus trees and wood. A good forest management takes care of the total forest area, variety etc. so that the biodiversity is maintained as far as possible.

Broad leaf trees take in carbon dioxide and convert it to oxygen. I think it was Priestly who discoverd this about a hundred and fifty years ago. We need to keep up this conversion of CO2 to O2 if the human race is to survive. Look at the worst case - if we had no trees and there were billions of us we would die of lack of O2. There is not much science in it so I can't do more then that

you would replant it for several reason. trees provide oxigen and we all know how important that is, also it is apart of our environment and also home to many creatures. overall it is environmentally friendly and if the trees are cut down in the first place as they are required for something then it is right to replace it.

You chop down the tree to get wood. Then you re-plant it to offset the environmental damage and so in the future you can get more wood.

because, trees produce oxygen and iff we didnt have any trees we would probably ru out, we need more trees because of the carbon dioxide in the world :)
