I have BCBS and they will not allow me to add maternity insurance. They say you only have 30 days once married and I did not know that. I am not pregnant. But I want to get my options other than changing insurance companies. Please help if you know of anything! Thanks!

I guess I should have added......they say there isn't a open enrollment. They said that the only way possible for me to add maternity is to cancel my policy for 6 mths.

A company is required by law to enroll you during open enrollment period or during the first 30 days you become eligible for insurance. Your best bet is to wait until the next open enrollment if it's past the 30 days or to find a different insurance.

Because the insurance policies are based on collecting money and being able to use that money to pay out on policies, there are few if any insurance companies that will take on a person for insurance coverage only during the pregnancy. There is no profit for the insurance companies in this, unless they charge a very high premium. That's why most insurance companies have a waiting period or won't cover preexisting conditions.

As you can imagine the possible complications that may occur during pregnancy and delivery can run the gambit from minor to major...including either or both the child and mother dying during child birth. Malpractice insurance for OB/GYNs and anesthesiologists is extremely high to their high risk specialty and high risk & rate of being sued. In 1978 an anesteseolosist friend's malpracatice insurance was $125,000 per year. He worked for a hospital and they paid it as part of his compensation. He told me that if he had a private practice he would have been paying 3 times that amount....think what it would be today.

My only suggestion is to contact independent insurance agents that can search out any possible companies that will provide maternity insurance coverage. They have the contacts and they can spend the time doing the leg work (for free) saving you the time and aggravation.

Best of luck.

If you are not pregnant, just wait, you will have the oppurtunity to change your plan for next year during the open enrollement season (Nov or so). Most insurance companies will sell you individual coverage covering pregnancy, but it will be very expensive.
