Just outta curiousity, if you were going to visit a friend who lives in Banff do you have to pay to get into the park?? What if someone lives there and they are local? Thanks.

As a major highway go through the park, you don't have to pay the park fee if you are traveling through without stopping. The exemption did include going into the town of Banff. But any stop in the Park requires a paid permit. If I actually lived in Banff, I would own a annual pass as I am sure I would stop at a rest area or picnic site, go hiking or use the hot springs several times a year.

Yes, you do have to pay if you stop anywhere in Banff National Park (or any of the other national parks, like Yoho or Jasper), even if it's only a short visit. Locals get free annual passes for the park they live in (ie Banff residents are free in Banff National Park, but not in Yoho).

I believe you have to pay if you are going to stop in the park.
I suspect that here is an exception for those who live here.
I liked the "old" days when you bought a yearly pass and proudly displayed it on your vehicle window!
