Some of the biggest things that lead to Italian unification happened in that year. People think that when you say "Italy" and you're talking about like the 1700's or whatever that it was a country. (Or with Germany). It wasn't. It was a bunch of neighboring states that often fought with eachother. Some people in the 1800's started to think it would be good for Italy to unite, especially with Germany uniting to the North and with France to the west. I can't remember most of the things that happened honestly. Look up the following people though: Giuseppe Mazzini, Garibaldi, Count Camillo di Cavour and King Victor Emmanuel II. That should give you a feel for the going on of "Italy" in 1880! (I believe Italy unified in 1881, though it was largely de jure at that point.)

Yes large scale immigration gets underway about that time but maybe the most famous event was a meeting in Milan, Italy in 1880 about the education of the deaf.

Most of the Italians immigrated to the U.S in 1880. Alot of them settled in Canada at this time, until later Gold Rush fever sent them to the west. Try typing in "Italian History, 1880" when you do your search.
