5 weeks is very very early for a scan. If this is what your doctor has recommended to you, then that's what you should do, but don't do it just for fun. There will be very little that can be seen at this stage.
Having a scan is not going to prevent you from having a miscarriage. My sister in law had a scan at 6 weeks. They said everything looked fine. She then miscarried then next day. She blames the ultrasound. I think it would have happened anyway.

When I had a scan at 5 weeks All they could see was the gestatioanl and yolk sac..I could not see my baby until week 6. The heartbeat may or may not be visible at this time on ultrasound...There heart is beating now but u/s just may not detect it yet *i got one also at 6 weeks*....u probably wont be able to see your little baby yet as hes wayyy too little, but u know there is always a chance u might see something...good luck!

This week, your baby's heart and circulatory system are taking shape. Your baby's blood vessels will complete a circuit, and his or her heart will begin to beat. Although you won't be able to hear it yet, the motion of your baby's beating heart may be detected with an ultrasound exam.

I had one as well, I think it was about 5-6weeks as well (don't remember exactly). You won't be able to see baby yet but you'll see sac and will be able to hear heart beat (you'll love that feeling!). Now, I have a beautiful girl =)
Congrats&take care of both you now!

Most likely not at 5 weeks and this surprises me as most doctors won't even take you into the surgery until you are at least 8 weeks gone.

they might do they might not - I wouldon't get alarmed though if they don't your baby will be about the size of a grain of rice you will probably have an internal scan aswell they won't see a lot through your belly
