No. These kids are already paying through the nose to get through school, no one should be able to tell them they have to give more to graduate.

Perhaps for some majors (for instance, it might be a good idea for a major in social work or some such), but for the most part, not really. You're there, quite possibly paying a lot of money to be there, to learn a certain set of skills. If you're in engineering, what would community service teach you which would help you become a better engineer? It's time that would be better spent learning more about engineering (not that engineers are worked hard enough :) ).

No. Many students are having to work when they are not in class to pay the outrageous tuition and book fees. Those who arent working probably dont work because the classes take up so much of their time. I'm taking 15 credits this semester and have on going group projects in 3 of my classes that have to be done outside of class along with general class work and I'm trying to finish up getting 35 observation hours. I don't have time to do community service!! I get a small break in each day and Im sorry but I'm using it on myself!

Only in a Communist or Fascist dictatorship.
If mandated, it takes away from the WANT to help thus loosing the meaning of giving..
The same people who complain about a military draft are the first to mandate community service.

maybe not community service, but volunteering in their chosen field to get to know what to expect (like student teaching).
