According to the founders, they were looking for a short name that would be easy to remember. They were founded in the East Bay area (San Francisco/Oakland), so their name actually stands for East Bay, or, shortened to eBay.

maybe "e" stands for electronic like "e" in e-mail and bay stands for store. So it is an electronic store or online store to be precise. My 2 cents.
