I will...my council tax bill fell through my letter box a couple of weeks ago and left a crater!
The tax has to be based on ability to pay and should never have been based on property values as this is something the occupier has no control over.If you want to live or rent a house the value of property in the area is not something that you can not control , and what about the people who have had property passed on to them through family, they are not necessarily rich. The value of your house does not pay for the weekly food bill does it so it is totally irrelevant.Just because your house is worth more than some one else's it does not mean you have a larger income. That is like saying everyone who shops at sainsburys must pay more for there food because its a posh shop!!...I just wish my husbands annual pay rises were on the same rate as council tax inflation ,we would definitely be better off!

Strange isn't it the government think that all living in expensive houses are rich. The fact that some have bought their houses in areas where the prices have been over inflated is of no consequence to them of the public. What is the justice in the system where a family with 4 incomes in a cheap house pay less that an OAP in a family house on their own pay more, usually for less services. At least on inequity of the council house rent being the same as the rates for a similar house in the private sector is gone.

To all the people who rioted in 1990; are you satisfied now homeowners are paying stratospheric levels of tax? The Community Charge(Poll tax) was so much fairer; you paid dependent on how many people lived in the house. Why should I as a single person pay as much as a family of 4 when I use a quarter of the public services?

Council Tax isn't Poll tax, that's the whole point.

Poll tax was the same amount per person no matter how rich you are. It was then changed so that the more expensive the house (ie the richer you are), the more you pay.

Can you please tell us your better suggestion for paying for the police/fire brigade etc fairly?

To Dave T below:
Councile tax is paid to your local council for the services in your local area. As incomce tax is taken nationally it would be hard to distribute fairly and evenly. I am not pro Blaire, but this is really one of the better things we have from the government

To Duffer below:

You are right. However, it was the Conservatives who brought it in and only took it away after the Poll Tax riots.

I think its a great idea, I would sign, but I am afraid it would not do any good, because Sheree would tell Tony to ignore it
He already ignores his own Cabinet.
