I am going to use a spray gun, not spray paint. I was told about 1 gal per every 40 sq. ft. This would be a lot of paint.

For spray painting, a gallon of paint will cover about 250 to 300 square feet. This would mean you need 16 to 20 gallons of paint.

Be sure to mix the cans of paint together before you paint, in case one is slightly different than the rest.

Depends if it is being painted a darker color than it currently is, it will take more paint to cover up a dark color with a light one, also is the 5000 sqft the size of the house or have you already figured out the sqft of the walls? I would estimate for 200sqft =1 gallon.

spray cans list the average coverage rate. Divide this into 5000 and you will know how many cans to buy.
