Friction?

I was trained young to pull my laces very tight, All the way along the 'zipper'. Then I read an article about foot care, which says Not to! It said to tighten around the openings, but to leave the rest of the foot area loose enough to move one's feet & wiggle ones toes comfortably. In other words ... don't wear tight shoes! Doing so has caused the laces much less friction.
I don't think my laces break as often now, as they used too ... (: http://www.watchtower.org/e/20040222/article_01.htm

Overzealous pulling to tighten after fretting in the eyelets over time.

Suggest you get new ones with heavy duty aglets. You don't want light duty aglets. (Aglets go through the eyelets.)

It couldn't stand the strain of your pudgy fingers.
