1. My XP desktop gets one, but when I plug the patch cable into the laptop, it doesnt get a gateway address. It gets an ip address and a subnet mask, but no default gateway. I tried releasing/renewing the IP, but it won't let me (forgot what the message was)
2. DHCP is enabled
3. I get it work by manually assigning the TCP/IP settings, but dont want to have to do this all the time.

Any suggestions?

Is the IP address it gets correct for the network? By default in Windows an interface gets a default IP address in a weird subnet (169.254). I guess this is some kludge to make sure that Windows computers on an unmanaged network, by someone who doesn't know the gory details, can magically talk to each other. If you're getting that, then Vista is simply not seeing or talking to the DHCP server.

My first guess is to double-check the DHCP server for anything that would prevent it from talking to the Vista box. For example, maybe your DHCP IP range is used up. Or maybe you have a restrictive client MAC list and you need to add the new box to it. Or something.

What do you have acting as the dhcp server? Wireless router? What's the range of ips you are getting is it the 169.254? To me it sounds like you don't have enough ip's in the scope for your laptop to get one. Do you have any reservations or mac filtering in place?
