I'm still searching for these intellectual elite. It must be like the watering down of the quality of sports by adding more teams. The more teams, the less stars on any squad. The harder it is to find that quality.
The same must said for political parties. We don't have more parties, we have more factions and groups. Thankfully, we are finally weaning ourselves from the Harvard nipple. We are finding that there are other sources for intelligence than the diminishing return gene pool that continues to send their offspring there and to other ivy league schools like them. Just because you didn't attend Harvard, doesn't mean that you are not smart, as is always implied by those who did. It doesn't mean you couldn't get in, either.
The influx of more country-wide graduates with new thoughts and processes are giving a new life to politics and will, hopefully, light the way to our future well being.
Dogma implies that the parties cannot make a mistake in these matters. Obviously, they can or are perceived to have erred by the opposite party. Each party has leadership and speakers to define their goals and state their positions. This is where the spin doctors come in to tell you what the other one said. They don't allow us to think for ourselves. Communication is the biggest factor in all of this, because we aren't given enough time to think for ourselves. We are used to being led around by these soothsayers and what they have to say right after it is said. No thoughts allowed, here is what he said or meant! It all started when we lost our free speech opinion at the water cooler, bunko game, or somewhere else the next day. We have become Sheeple!

When it became apparent that theories weren't being listened to.
The drive to be listened to and respected, rather than ignored, has been behind some of histories most interesting and terrible events.
