It seems like the media acts "shocked" when someone famous does something wrong. It doesn't seem like everyday people are surprised at all. It's almost refreshing to hear about stars messing up, it reminds me they are human. The media always talks about a "lack of role models". What do you think?

I think the media creates celebrity, and then milks it for ratings and sales.

My favorite role model is my dad.

I don't follow any media darlings.

We are all obligated to be on our best behavior as much as is possible for fallible human beings (if the world were more polite, everyone would be happier).

I think the market encourages celebrities be on their best behavior. Generally, speaking, acting poorly or breaking the law tarnishes a celebrity's image making it harder for him or her to get endorsement deals and other lucrative contracts. Sure, for some, say Paris Hilton, acting wild is part of their image and yields financial rewards. However, I believe this is more the exception than the rule.

Overall, I am sorry that people look up to celebrities as role models. Look up to your Mom or Dad, brother or uncle, friend or neighbor. The celebrity culture as demonstrated by all this attention given to Anna Nicole's death, is dragging America down and distracting people form important issues like education, poverty, the war(s), etc..

There are lots of good people quietly doing good work all over this country. Find these folks, thank them and use them as role models.

everyone makes mistakes but when professional athletes break the law like they have been doing lately thats just wrong. pro football players have been getting arrested for serious crimes not simple mistakes. the same for basketball players. these are the role models of kids. actors are looked up to but not the way athletes are.
and lets not forget about the steroid scandal.

something here needs to change.

They are role models whether they want to be or not. and yes they should be on their best behavior as they get paid enough. What's wrong with the system when athletes get paid millions and our military is scraping to pay the bills. Athletes give maybe an injury here and there, our troops give their lives.♥ Explain that one to me!

Well yeah, they make poor choices sometimes like the rest of us... it happens from time to time. Who cares how celebrities act?... But the athletes should be on their best behavior because they are representing a team.

I think they do. Especially those stars who influence our youth. They definitely have the obligation to act on thier best behavior. Then, they complain when thay can't live normal lives without being scrutinized. But, aren't they the ones who chose that profession? Nobody made them do it!

I agree. The media are a set of pricks.
My boyfriend laughs when the headlines of the paper are
"Vicar in Sex Shame with 19 year old blonde" .....

"Shame".....he says.... "He wants a friggin medal.

or Star gets drunk and goes skinny dipping

Haven't we all done that - lol

Celebrities are people too. Unfortunately they have to live their lives, good or bad, in front of all of us. If we are lucky, we can learn valuable lessons from them without having to personally go through the same thing.

I don't find it "refreshing" at all. I find it disgraceful and just another bit of proof that we all too easily settle for mediocrity!
