my 6 cylinder odyssey has a cylinder failing, but my mechanic doesn't know which. He said he needs the check engine light to come on before he can get this information. Why is this? If it does need replacing, does the whole engine need to be taken out? How much would that cost?

If you truly have a cylinder "failing" the check engine light would have already illuminated and would have stored a mis-fire code.Quickly remove your Honda from this person and find an independent Honda specialist in your area.

Because your mechanic is probably not a Honda technician who has the proper tools. If a cylinder is failing, your Honda dealer should be able to tell you which one and what is needed to fix it. This is not a job I would trust to just any mechanic.

It could just be a faulty plug, plug wire or injector. That mechanic is not a good one if he can't tell.

for starters, he can check the resistance in each injector or the ohms/resistance in each plug wire and he can also check the spark plug itself. Also if he pulls the spark plugs in inspects each one, he can tell which one is misfiring due to the corrosion on the plugs.
