Laptop. IBM ThinkPad. Yes.
I managed to buy it myself, have had no problems with it so far & I've had it for about 3 years already.

Get a desktop, and spend a little extra on a good monitor. Most people get a good computer and pick up a borderline monitor as an afterthought, a $99 model. The screen is your intimate interface with the machine. It's what you are going to be looking at the whole time you use it. Therefore, you MUST get something with a good dot pitch and fine resolution, that doesn't blur things. Careful monitor shopping will save your eyesight.
For the above reasons, I have to give thumbs down to all laptops I've seen. They cause eyestrain because the monitors are not as eye friendly as a top of the line plasma or a crt. Laptop makers skimp on 2 things: the case, and the monitor. Seriously.

We have both a laptop that's a Compaq and a desktop that's a iMac. I don't really care for laptops but I love my Mac, if we ever had to get another computer that's what I'd get again. Mac's a great you never have to buy new software, you just update the software you have through the internet and that's that. No, virus' and bugs. It's GREAT!!!
