The new tax band (Band G - £300 this year, £400 next year) will apply to all new cars with CO2 emissions of over 225g/km registered on or after 23rd March 2006. Cars registered before that date are still considered to be Band F (currently £205 per year).

A brand new Nissan X-Trail 2.5 16v 4x4 manual petrol emits 226g/km of CO2 on the EC combined cycle, so would be subject to the raised taxation. Whether it applies to your car or not depends on the date of first registration.

A current Ford Galaxy 2.0 manual emits just 197g/km, so would not be subject to the new taxation. However the old Galaxy 2.3 emitted 242g/km, supporting your claim that the X-Trail uses less fuel - its just not quite enough less fuel.

This 4x4-bashing is totally unfair. Some 4x4s are smaller, safer and use less fuel than the saloon-car equivalent.

Even my 3 litre Jaguar - a relatively thirsty car - uses less fuel than a Mini Cooper S! But where are the ranting, know-nothing, eco-mentalists calling for Minis to be banned!? Could it be because many working class people drive smaller cars or don't drive at all and envy those with more expensive vehicles?

I'm waiting to see how the budget proposal will be implemented: will it be done on engine capacity (very silly), emissions, or efficiency rating? The basic flaw in the proposal is that it harms the environment less to drive fewer miles in a thirsty vehicle than to drive huge miles in a more thrifty one. And we are already taxed for the fuel we "guzzle" - at the pumps! Therefore there's no point, it's just a cynical tax-grab.

The problem with the anti-car lobby is that they hate cars! Thus, they are often ignorant about automotive design and just spout outdated propaganda.

SOME 4x4s are gas guzzlers. SOME 4x4s are big.

Many are not. Many are well-designed, practical vehicles. Same goes for high performance cars. There's no point telling some tofu-munching, hemp-smoking eco-nutjob this though: they know what they believe and won't let facts get in the way!

Anything that doesn't look like it should have a pull string attached to the front of it is a gas guzzler. All 4X4 are gas happy. Then again anything that is good on gas is boring. So I'll stick with sucking gas and hauling a s s .
