I currently live in Canada where there is no chance of getting hit by a hurricane or tornado. The worst we have is very cold winters, which I want to get away from, but I'm scared to death of the idea of tornadoes, or any weather that could rip apart my house. I would love to be a close distance to a beach/lake (maybe 2 hours driving) because I know that the closer you are to the water, you're increasing your chance of floods, etc. I don't want to be in a large community (by large I mean 500,000+). Any suggestions? Oh, and I have a family so it has to be low crime.

No temperate climates are immune from tornadoes.
Hurricanes can occur anywhere along the eastern seaboard and heavy snow Virginia on up.
