Snobbish isn't exactly the word for my cat as she reacts quite violently to the sight of another feline or dog. She gets used to dogs and will tolerate their presence but she prefers to be alone. My problem is that I can tell she is getting lonely and restless as I am away from home more than she would prefer. I hate to have her lonely when I'm gone, as she usually repays my neglect with a full urinary salute (never leave towels on the floor with a bitter cat around) but I'd hate to get another cat and have them never get along. I'm worried she'll fight to the death if I leave her unattended with another cat. However, I am in no way a dog person and if my cat is feeling neglected I can't imagine how upset a dog would be. Is there anything I can do to introduce another cat or will she never warm up to one? Should I start with a kitten perhaps or should I just break down and get a breed of dog?

She reacts poorly to any cats. Inside, outside or caged near her in the shelter I saved her from. She hisses and throws herself at the door when she sees a cat outside through the glass and starts a fight immediately if I have a cat inside trying to warm it from the ice storm outside. I housed a small breed dog for a few months and she delt with her but she wasn't happy about it.

If she hates other cats, and seems to prefer to be alone, then I would get a cat sitter to come in while you are gone for longer periods.. Just someone to come in to check her food and water, play with her for a while, maybe even just sit and watch tv with the cat on their lap. Another cat would likely be too upsetting, she's likely looking for human companionship.

If you dont' particularly like dogs, don't consider getting a dog just for the cat...

Are the "other" cats and dogs outside, or is she being forced to be near them in the same house? All cats are skittish, so her reaction if they are in the house is normal.

Don't be so hard on yourself, you are not neglecting her. Yes depending on your answer to the above question you may be able to introduce another cat, but call a humane society or shelter or me kery@felinezen.com first to get good advice that is tailored to your specific kitty.

She's a she, so maybe get a kitten that she can treat as her own. Also you have to show her how to behave as she's never had another cat around, show her what's acceptable. Get a watergun and squirt her with water if she does something bad.

Also to help her get used to other animals consider arranging playdates for your cat with another animal, especially another cat, see how they get along, give them some catnip etc, just don't leave them unsupervised right away.

Best of luck.
