Don't do it because you're afraid of Howard's production dropping. It won't.
Unless you can pry Santana away as part of a package, try trading one of your other guys. Derek Lee is a good choice.

I wouldn't recommend trading Ryan Howard for anybody other than Albert Pujols, but since you have depth at 1B, pulling the trigger might not be that bad.
-A-Rod might be a good choice to fill in that offensive infield or Jose Reyes if you need 5-cat consistency in the lineup.
-The only elite starter you can get is Johan Santana and he's basically untouchable by most owner, so unless you can put a good package for him, I wouldn't consider that.
-Other top-line pitcher don't really match the value one-on-one that Howard is holding unless both elite pitchers are package in the same deal for Howard, which is not going to happen.
Basically, you can only get offense for offense if you trade Howard. Just put him on the block and see what kind of offers you can get for Howard and if the owners can't convince you of a blockbuster deal that works, then I suggest holding off Howard and put your other 1B (mostly Derrek Lee I'm leaning towards) for a pitcher (namely Chris Carpenter or Joe Nathan that equals the value of Derrek Lee).

The only pitcher I would trade Howard for would be Santana. If that's not possible, then I would trade Sheffied or LaRoche instead. They can get you someone like AJ Burnett, John Patterson or Felix Hernandez inexchange. These guys are undervalued entering the season (after missing most of last year), but they should provide you very solid pitching numbers without having to surrender a top 8 player like Howard.

Ryan Howard is one of the best run producers in the game but you can get a lot of help in other areas if you trade him. It really depends on how much help you need in other categories.
I'd offer trades for Santana and his/her 1B for Howard and a slightly less established pitcher with high upside potential. Most managers don't like to trade unless they're getting similar positions in return. Be sure to look at your opponent's team to see what the need is.
A bit of advice. Offer at least 2 trades as then the other manager will know you're open to negotiations. That's what trades are all about.

i'm from philadelphia and a phillies fan. i pay attention to 610wip activities communicate plenty. therefor, i understand that the phillies are notoriously low-value while it includes those kinda deals. in the event that they cant get the best purchase they want long term, which i dont think of they are able to(howard needs a hundred plus million), then the phillies will string him alongside with 365 days deals or bypass to arbitration until they cant do this anymore. ive considered autographed worldwide sequence team balls with everybodys signature yet howards. this implies he's conscious the thank you to barter and could be stubborn adequate to watch for the main magnificent deal. all this being suggested i see it like this. 2009 arbitration 16mil or so. 2010 a million year deal @ 18mil. and 2011 see ya later ryan howard, hi C point possibilities. ....jc romero pitching in w.b.c! wow

I would get rid of Lee myself. He has had 1 good year, and that is it. Otherwise his numbers at the 1B position are nothing special. His value is very high, and you could probably get a very good #1 SP for him.
Short of getting Santana for Howard, I would not do it. And if the owner that has Santana drafted him before you drafted Howard, you can forget that trade.

Not sure of ALL the cats your league has but since walks aren't one of them, trade him for a front line pitcher.
You can make up most of his HR's & RBI's with the other guys.
And you're right, if he has no protection, he won't see much to hit this year. People are predicting another 50 HR year. I don't see that. Burrell doesn't scare anyone anymore so he's not much protection.

Letting Howard go would be a mistake in my opinion. I watched him hit a ton of homers in the minors. He isnt even at his prime yet.
