i mean should this awful subject be of such importance??let alone that our critical spirit can be cultivated otherwise not only by math learning....
only fundamental math principles should be taught...what do u all think?
this school math won't ever be necessary 4 any1 of us except 4 mathematicians and other experts...

Math builds critical thinking skills. I agree that some higher level math skills will not be used by some people, but the skill it teaches will be useful. Based on your language, you need more critical thinking skills.

Calculators are a tool, not a crutch. If you don't know the basics of what the calculator is actually doing, then it is worthless. If you don't know what dividing something means, then you can't use it. It's like having a hammer and no nails.

Who needs math? Everyone! When your trying to figure out how much money you'll be paid, how much money something will cost, or try to figure out the mortgage to your house, guess what you'll be using. MATH!!! and no calculator will do it for you.

Then again, if you don't want to learn math and trust others to do all the math for you, don't argue when the bank makes a mistake and takes out to much money. Don't get mad when they say you owe more on your car than you actually do. or when they evict you from your house.

You wouldn't know what to do with a calculator if you didn't take math any more than you'd know how to read a book if you never learned the alphabet.

Granted, math needs to be updated for the information age, and what Americans really need is PRACTICAL math. Leave the calculus tho those who WANT to take it, and teach the rest how to do math in their heads, and balance their checkbooks, and calculate interest and do taxes, and build structures that won't fall down. In 50 years this country will be last in the 1st world in math and science.

I hate math too, but it should be taught in school. How often do you carry a calculator around...Do you want to follow any career path besides being an english teacher (even though they still use math). Do you want to balance a checkbook? Not to mention math teaches us a useful way of looking at problems and solving them, a skill which can be used in any facet of life.....
