The first African American in space was Guion (Bud) Bluford who orbited as a crewman on the space shuttle on Aug. 30, 1983. The first black man in space was Arnaldo Tamayo Mendez, of Cuba, who went into space aboard Salyut 6, of Russia. in 1980.
