Alcoholism is poisonous to relationships. Sooner or later there will be a breakup, so the most loving thing you can do is to gently but firmly take a stand. Tell him if he does not take decisive steps to address his problem you are leaving him. If he chooses the liquor over you then he would have left you eventually anyway and you are better off without him

Hi

Gently sit him down and talk to him not at him there is a difference . Tell him how his drinking makes you feel and suggest to him that he needs to stop or the relationship will not work .

Not making jokes but whatever you do talk to him when he is sober because if he is clear headed he will be able to listen to what you have to say . If the relationship means anything to him he won't jeopardize it .
Take care
C

Say that you love him but....
It sounds negative but it should be. There's no way to turn alcoholism into a positive.
Rest assured, you are not the first person to tell him that either.
