They have them in pet stores in California.
My friend says hers is an African Pygmy.
They eat meat, worms, insects, some grain.
You can get their food in the pet store. It's
not cheap..$35. for 6oz of insects and
$30. for 10lbs. of meat and worm base diet.
You need a special cage and they need some
special care as well. Ask at Petsmart.......

Hedgehogs require an escape proof cage as some of them are climbers. I like to use Superpet's Extra Large My first homes because they have a plastic bottom and the wire part of the cage provides nice airflow. Machurio also makes a similar cage that works well. I use both of these types of cages as well as my hedgie condo that I made. They need to be kept warm... avg. temperature range should be between 70-78F year round. Hedgies need a good solid bottom wheel to run on (15" superpet comfort wheel or a bucketwheel), substrate (this can range from kiln dried pine or aspen shavings, to yesterdays news, to carefresh to liners. I prefer fleece liners), they'll need a place to hide and sleep (plastic iglooo, wood hidey box, hedgie bag) food/water bowl,a few solid plastic cat toys.
I recommend feeding a mix of high quality cat foods as a staple diet. My mix currently includes: Chicken Soup Light, Wellness Light, Innova Light, Felidae Platinum, Evolve Senior and Solid Gold. Insects (not the ones you get outside) can be given a few times a week in addition to veggies, fruits and lean unseasoned cooked meats.
I've seen prices range from $75 and up depending on the color. They are an expensive animal to maintain if done properly. Of all the animals in my zoo, they are by far the most expensive!! I'll never be without a hedgehog!
Hedgehogs are legal to own in texas. Here's a link to a USDA breeder. I would recommend a breeder over a petstore hedgie.

on the 2nd hedgehogs are actually not authorised interior the U.S. interior the states of Alabama, California, Georgia, Hawaii and Utah, besides the fact that if i've got been advised that hedgehogs are extremely obtainable in the two Alabama (the place they're extremely obtainable in puppy shops, in accordance to Tim Pearson), and Utah (the best notice there seems to be extremely uncertain -- probably a similar venture as existed in Idaho). the justifications given for the ban are `environmental,' with the claimed worry that this way of animals being presented might get away and stay to tell the story in feral situations, and doubtless disappointed some area of the present environment. There are infinite extra `political' critiques as to extra motives.

African Pigmy Hedgehogs are periodically available in pet shops in Texas, it is usually a matter of asking YOUR pet shop to order you one. I have seen Hedgehogs available for as little as $35.00. You need some kind of enclosure, there are several commercial manufacturers of the food (they can also eat a QUALITY cat food). They love crickets and meal worms as well but not as a steady diet.
