The bag itself is important. It completes the look. I also only carry important stuff in there. I have to go through it all the time to make sure it doesn't end up too full.
But the good stuff's in there.
1. bare minimum makeup for touchups, not the full crew
2. wallet
3. tissue
4. cell
5. keys
6. purell
Occassionally:
1. Advil
2. pen/pad of paper
3. lady items
4. mp3 player
5. a diaper/wipes/bottle/washcloth
My mother in law used to carry a huge bag so full of stuff until recently when she started to have shoulder problems and a couple surgeries (caused by work). It still a big bag now but not like before.

Not all women do... I used to but its easier for me not to. I just carry a wallet now and the husband usually pays anyway. And yes there are important things in there since your wondering sometimes a women is on her cycles so she has to carry things for that, medicine, keys, wallet, pens, driver's license, agenda list. Things for the kids sometimes snacks. Not a mother but I know, I've seen womens purses that do have these things. :)

Mine is a purse I knitted, and it does contain important items. Keys and wallet. If I didn't have them, how could I purchase things I need? And how could I get into my home?
I don't do the oversized carpet bags that are in style right now. Those are just ridiculous.

Oh dear sweet boy. There ARE important things in there. If women did not carry purses, the world would be in very sad shape.

These bags are as important of an accessory as they are to carrying things. Its mostly because it pulls a look together.

My purse is a necessity!! I feel so lost without it. It has my keys, cell, lip gloss, a mirror and my wallet, which is pretty important. Guys can fit everything in their pockets for the most part, because their pants are usually baggier, but girls wear tighter fitting clothes, and many pants and skirts don't even have pockets, so purses are necessary!
Plus, they are the best accessory, in my eyes....

Not all women do; I have a bag/purse that I use on weekday when I go to work, but after work I just have a little wallet that holds my cards & phone. I don't need all that extra baggage it slows me down.

Well, there are important things in mine. Importance is subjective to some extent so what you may see as unimportant may actually be important to many women.

I do all of the time, but the size varies depending on where I am going and what I may need.
