MERALCO in Metro-Manila, has been a monopoly for a long long time. Controls power at the heart of the Philippines, (pun intended).

Horizontal mergers are happening among banks to be able to compete internationally.

Vertical mergers I believe are happening among companies of different lines of business or products as they are purchased by a particular group of companies.

The key word here is Natural. A natural monopoly is an industry characterized by relatively high initial investment costs, the result being it is unprofitable for a second player to enter the market.
A large scale example would be Meralco.
On a smaller scale, a small town may only have one shopping mall, or a small village only one bar. This is because the industry cannot within that market support a second.

On paper, there aren't many. However, in practice, the top corporations which lead a particular market conduct ingrained collusion activities to maintain their positions. Yes, it's the same in any capitalist country, but the Philippine government is one of the partners in these shenanigans.
