I live inOklahoma where the spring and summers are hot and humid and I have clover, crabgrass, dandelions, and a purple flower weed in my lawn. What does anyone recommend?

Simple.....

ON saturday or whatever day you have a day off, get out there with gloves, and a bucket, maybe even a screwdriver. But get out there and pull em all out by hand. This is the most effective way of getting weeds. Chemicals, herbicides, oh yeah, they work, but at a cost. They contaminate the soil.

Clover is super easy to get rid of. Just pull it up whole at the base of the weed, making sure you get the root and all.

Dandelions, same thing. If any part of the root stays in, us ethe screwdriver to dig it out.

For Crabgrass, just pull it out whole. Grab a handful, and give it a twist, and pull it all out. Yeah, you'll get some soil with it too, and if you have enough of it in yer yard, you'll have plenty of spots. But there are ways to fix this. If you dont have St Augustine grass, this can generally be fixed with a crab grass killer. But this is the only time I would recommend using any kind of herbicide as crab grass can be very very invasive.

But, for any and all weeds, or for grass in flower beds, the best thing to do is to get on yer hands and knees and yank em all out by hand. Trust me on this as this has been the best way I have found out to do this for the last 15 years.

Best of luck....

I live in Tulsa and my yard has the same problem with the same weeds. I'm spreading Scott's Weed and Feed over the whole yard to prevent future weeds from germinating. This won't work on the crabgrass, however, so I'm digging those up by hand. Alternately, my neighbor who has the same problem, said she bought a crabgrass-specific herbicide at Wal-Mart. I don't know the brand name, but her crabgrass is already beginning to wilt.

My father used to use a propane torch to scorch the seedheads of dandelions, but Round-up would probably work better. As for the purple-headed weeds, those are not a problem. They will die off as soon as it gets hotter. You can control them in the meantime with a mower, weed-eater or just pull them up manually. The roots are extremely shallow and rip out easily.

For patches of clover, I've found that you can "scalp" them pretty effectively with a weed eater. Just hold the line at a 45 degree angle with the ground and rev the engine.

If you have any of those sharp-leaved weeds that sprout out low to the ground in circular patches, use a mattock or hoe to sever the massive taproot that holds them in place. Get as much out of the ground as you can and they usually die.

Go to the local garden supply store and buy two things:
1) 2-4-D. The well known commercial name is Weed-B-Gone.
DO NOT BUY the granular kind. 2-4-D only kills the weed by soaking into the leaf. Then it travels through the plant and destroys the root. You can pile 2-4-D granular all around the plant and it won't kill it. IT HAS TO SOAK IN THROUGH THE LEAVES.
2) Lawn fertilizer. Follow the instructions and this will make your yard green. (it will also make it grow more and need to be mowed more often)

NOTE: 2-4-D and fertilizer both work better in wet, high growing environments. If you spray 2-4-D on the weeds when they are dry and starved for water, it will do virtually nothing. If you put fertilizer on dry grass, it will burn it and can kill it.

Go to Wal-Mart and buy some WeedNFeed. It kills the weeds and fertilizes the grass. I use it every year.

I sure hope you get some good answers on this, because I want to know too!

I'm seriously thinking that maybe the answer is to nuke everything, pour concrete, and paint the concrete green...:-((
