Stress can , but it has to be REALLY, REALLY bad. Think about it, pregnant women who lost their husbands in the 9/11 attack went on to have babies. Can you imagine the stress they were under? And starving women in Somalia who have inadequate shelter and no hope of feeding their other children carry babies to term.

So it has to be a mix of extreme stress and a natural weakness within your body (or the baby's body) that will lead to miscarriage. For instance, if you suffer from high blood pressure already and you BP goes way up due to stress, that could cause problems. But if you are healthy, it is unlikely to be a problem.

Straining during BMs will not cause a miscarriage. It may appear to cause one if a miscarriage has already started and the straining forces the blood out initially. It can cause some stress to a baby if it is prolonged, and it can even cause some spotting if you have sensitive membranes on your cervix. The best thing to do is drink lots of water, walk regularly, and eat fiber (I love Fiber One bars...yummy and 30% of your daily fiber requirements!). Straining can also aggravate hemorrhoids and cause lower back problems during pregnancy

Never heard the hot chocolate thing. Maybe it has to do with caffeine? It is safe to drink small amounts of caffeine during pregnancy. I have read that a cup of coffee or a few cans of pop are fine. I'm sure a cup of hot chocolate or two would be perfectly safe!

As for tea, it depends on what's in it. If it is just regular tea, it will fall under the same rules as coffee and pop above. If it is herbal tea, you may want to stay away. Many herbs have unusual effects on pregnant women, and it is better to be safe than sorry.

You may want to check out a copy of the book "What to Expect When You Are Expecting." It covers all of the topics you have asked about, and many more that you will probably wonder about as your pregnancy progresses. It is a really helpful tool, and it has helped me many times when I was freaking out.

sounds like you are blaming yourself. It is not you. A miscarriage is the bodies way of getting rid of a fetus that either had something wrong with it, or the way you were carrying it. A healthy pregnancy doesn't suddenly end... their was something wrong with the pregnancy and the body was rejecting it. Constipation and pushing out feces and strainging and pushing... no. Constipation is a very common symptom of pregnancy. Many women push and push and push and it doesn't affect the baby at all. Hot tea and chocolate won't hurt the baby. Next time though.. eat really healthy and put your body in prime health and exercise.. could maybe help the next pregnancy settle in better in a healthier body... but that in and of itself.. won't cause a miscarriage. Stress? No. Stress can cause the baby to be upset and sleep more or act out and be more active. Well stress is like a stated of unhealth.. it is not posionous to the baby. I have had ALOT of stress during my pregnancies and they were fine. Also stress is caused by hormones, which is a pergnancy symptom. Now if you have a trama.. that could cause your body to expell a baby, but not even then all the time. Don't blame yourself and I am sure your next pregnancy will make you as happy as mine did!

Yes stress can cause a miscarriage as well as a numerous of things.Because when you're stressed out your body is stressed. When you are with child it takes alot for your body to be able to carry a baby. When your worried so is the fetus, the baby feels everything tht you feel. And no not from pushing stool out.And not from hot chocolate and tea.The caffine in the tea isn't good not everyday, but no it should'nt cause a misscarriage.

According to an article on WebMD, chemicals released by the brain during times of stress can cause a miscarriage in some cases, but not all cases.
