I don't have an istall cd... I bought it from a friend who got it from ebay... could there be something wrong with the actual hardware inside it? A loose cable or something...?

I saw someone who bought a macbook off of eBay and got screwed by the seller. I hope that wasn't your friend. anyway, go through the forums. I'm sure you'll find the anwer there. Sorry I don't know the answer offhand. There's gotta be a way to boot up in "safemode" like a pc and get your problem resolved. Good luck

Insert your Mac OS X installation disk, restart the computer and hold down the C key. When the Mac OS X installer starts up, look in the menus at the top for the disk utility. Use this to verify and repair your file permissions and your disk. This should fix your problem. You do not need to reinstall Mac OS X.
