We are about to go through it with my 6 year old, they want to check his IQ to see if he is just bored with his school work and then his developmental age against his chronological age and see where he lies. They will take all of this into account and decide if he is just bored, depressed, bipolar, behavioral disorder, etc. He has been getting into a lot of trouble, esp. socially at school.

He's been reading since he was four and has already mastered all of the kindergarten skills. He has become disruptive and defiant and does not get along with his classmates, but it is very sudden, no one knows what sets him off and he won't tell anyone or look at them when they confront him.

My daughter did a few weeks ago, and is also 6 years old.

She is also very intelligent, but was exhibiting behavioral problems at school and home. Namely in the areas of high anxiety and rage issues.

For us, the doctor had me fill out an evaluation about her behavior. Then he had both of us in the room and talked mostly to her, with asking me for details on certain subjects. He was really great with her and made it a very relaxed atmosphere. It helped her to open up to him and talk about how she was feeling.

For us, it basically came down to she is still feeling a bit insecure about her father and my separation (we got separated last year, but then decided to work it out and are back together). That will get better with time.

The anger the doctor believes is a learned trait. I am currently in anger management for my temper.

So in our daughter's case, time and Mommy changing her own behavior will be the biggest helps for our daughter.
